Best Ways to Save Money on a Wedding

Planning a wedding is an exciting experience, but it can also come with a hefty price tag. However, with a bit of creativity and careful planning, you can have a beautiful day without breaking the bank. Here are some great ways to save money on your wedding without sacrificing the magic.

Decide on Your Wedding Theme First!

The first step to saving money is knowing exactly what your dream wedding looks like. Why? Because making the right decision from the start helps avoid costly mistakes later in your wedding planning process.

Choose a Venue That Fits Your Wedding Theme

Selecting a venue that's naturally beautiful can save you money on decorations. For instance, if you're planning a rustic-themed wedding, choose a rustic-looking venue. On the other hand, if you want a modern, classy wedding, pick an elegant venue. Trying to turn an elegant venue into a rustic one can require a lot of effort and might be expensive. When the venue already fits your theme, it requires minimal enhancements to create a magical atmosphere.

Everything in One Place

It's bonus if you can find a wedding venue that offers the ceremony, reception, beautiful photo backdrops, and even accommodation all in one location. This can save you money and also benefit your guests by:

  1. Needing just one photographer and videographer to cover the whole day. They won't need to factor in travel time between locations, meaning more time for photos and potentially lower coverage costs.
  2. Saving on car hire. No fancy cars required since everything is on-site. Some couples spend more on car hire than photography, but wedding photos are heirlooms that last forever, while cars are only for a few hours.
  3. Making logistics easier for everyone, as guests won't need to travel between venues or worry about parking.

Choose an Off-Peak Season or Friday

Weddings held on Fridays or during off-peak months can significantly reduce both venue and vendor costs. Many vendors offer discounts for weddings that fall outside the popular Saturday schedule or prime wedding season.

Personally, I love photographing winter weddings for a few reasons. While the days are shorter, the light is often better. In summer, we sometimes miss out on the golden hour or sunset because, by the time the sun sets at 8 pm, we're already deep into the reception. In winter, with the sun setting around 5 pm, you can have an earlier ceremony, like 2:30 pm, and still enjoy 1 to 1.5 hours for photography during the golden hour. Additionally, rustic venues are often not air-conditioned, which can be uncomfortable during summer heatwaves. So, if you're planning a rustic-themed wedding, winter may be perfect for both the weather and cost!

Cut Down on Floral Costs

Instead of elaborate floral arrangements, opt for greenery or seasonal flowers, which are usually more affordable. You can also reuse flowers from the ceremony at the reception or incorporate non-floral décor like candles, lanterns, or potted plants to save money.

Opt for a Smaller Guest List

The size of your guest list is one of the biggest factors in determining your overall wedding costs. By cutting your list to close family and friends, you can reduce expenses on catering, invitations, favours, and venue size. A smaller, more intimate wedding also gives you the option of choosing a countryside venue that might be logistically difficult for a large guest list.

Hire Your Photographer and Videographer from the Same Studio

Hiring both photography and videography services from the same studio can offer savings. Many studios offer bundled services at lower rates, so you'll get great quality photos and videos without having to split your budget between separate providers.

Limit the Wedding Party

A smaller wedding party can help save on costs for flowers, gifts, and attire. The more bridesmaids and groomsmen you have, the more you'll spend on bouquets, boutonnieres, and associated costs. Size really does matter!

DIY When Possible

From wedding favours to simple décor, DIY can be a great way to save money. Get creative and enlist the help of friends and family, or look online for inspiration.

Simplify Your Menu

Food and drink can be one of the largest expenses. Consider a simpler menu or a shared banquet style rather than a multi-course sit-down dinner. Offering a signature drink instead of a full open bar can also help reduce costs.

Cut the Cake/ Dessert Costs

A multi-tiered wedding cake can be pricey. Instead, you could opt for a smaller display cake or a combination of cake and desserts like macarons or doughnuts. You could even forgo the cake altogether and offer a dessert bar or serve the wedding cake as dessert.

Rent Instead of Buy

Renting décor, outfits, or even furniture can save you a lot compared to buying. You can rent everything from wedding dresses to tuxedos, helping to keep expenses down.

Use Digital Invitations

Opt for digital invitations to save on printing, postage, and design costs. Not only are digital invites budget-friendly, but they're also more eco-friendly and convenient for your guests.

Skip or Simplify the Bomboniere

Favours are often overlooked by guests. Instead of spending on bomboniere, consider making a donation in your guests' names or providing something small and enjoyable, like lollies.

Conclusion

With some strategic planning and resourcefulness, you can have a beautiful and memorable wedding without overspending. Focus on what truly matters to you and your partner, and don’t be afraid to cut back on extras that won't have a lasting impact on your wedding day. By saving money in key areas, you can create the wedding of your dreams while keeping your finances in check.
